Readers' Workouts: The Color Run Edition

Tuesday, March 19, 2013

Hosted at Joy's Book Blog every Tuesday, Readers' Workouts gives us a chance to motivate each other and stay accountable to ourselves.

I have my little routine so I don't post this meme very often. How many times can you write, "I ran, I went to Pilates, and I went to Zumba" before everyone gets tired of seeing it?

But I have a little something different this week.

Sheila at BookJourney and Team Kickin' It mentioned The Color Run in one of her posts. "Colors?" I thought. "I can do colors." So I checked it out. And I decided that this is the 5K designed for me! And there were two that were happening pretty close by! I decided on the one taking place in Winston-Salem, NC on March 16.

I started bullying my friends recruiting my team. Ultimately, our team consisted of my husband, Luis; my sister, Rachel; my uncle, Rick; my friends Jade and Leanne; and me. And let me tell you, I know some of the best sports in the world. I kept getting geekier and geekier on them and they went with it. You'll see.

Our intention with this "run" was to have fun. We are not all runners but we all like to have a good time. We walked the course, but really, when you're going through checkpoints and getting handfuls of colored corn starch thrown at you, the slower you go, the better the pictures at the end. We had some fantastic pictures.

Our team name was Take No Prism-ers. Our heights vary wildly, so we used that to our advantage. We had to wear white shirts but I asked my sister, the shortest of us, to wear purple bottoms because purple has the shortest wavelength of visible light. We went right up through the spectrum to Rick, the tallest, who was in red because that is the longest wavelength. It looked awesome!

My sister came up with the idea of taping our team name on the backs our shirts. We hoped that after we got all colored up and then pulled off the tape, our team name would be left in white. It worked! We tried saving the colors on our shirts. Mine worked but my husband's washed out. :-(

Finally, my boss found us some of the ugliest, geekiest goggles to wear. My eyes stay pretty dry, so I was worried about all the corn starch really bothering them. My sister and I put them on with our outfits and fell in love! Rachel said, "Our theme is pretty nerdy, but other people might think we don't realize it. These goggles show that we are proud of our nerdiness! We are owning it!" I asked everyone for just one picture but we all left them on for the entire course. I know I was thankful for them more than once. It was a lot of fun but we were filthy, even on our faces!

If you get the chance to take part in one of these, you should! You do not have to be a runner at all. You just have to be willing to get colorful! Here's the list of locations.

I also signed up again for a mud run that is taking place here on June 1. I have the same team I had last year because we had so much fun that we all came back for seconds! I'll be posting about that in June.

What have your workouts been like lately?

  2. Woohoo! What fun! I love displaying the spectrum for a color run!

  3. Sounds like you all had a great time. Love the name of your team, tape idea, and the short color idea!

My daughter and I want to do a Color Run this year. Thanks for the link, I'll check to see if there's on near us.
