RIP X Sign-Up Post

Wednesday, September 9, 2015

I typically like to read horror/gothic/suspenseful-type stuff in October. There's just this feeling in the air, y'know? It feels right to curl up with a mug of tea and a creepy book while the temps outside drop and the leaves fall off the trees. I've gotten away from that over the past couple of years. My husband and I typically go on vacation in October and, for example, Hawaii just doesn't fit with the above scenario. We're vacationing a bit earlier this year, so I'm going to join the RIP X reading challenge. I've done this a few times in the past and I always have fun.

What is RIP X, you ask? Readers Imbibing Peril, take ten.

Read and/or watch, if you're so inclined, books from the following genres between September 1 and October 31, 2015:
  • Mystery
  • Suspense
  • Thriller
  • Dark Fantasy
  • Gothic
  • Horror
  • Supernatural
  • Anything sufficiently moody that shares a kinship with the above
Andi and Heather at The Estella Society are hosting this year (it was started by Carl at Stainless Steel Droppings). There are multiple ways to tackle this challenge, but I'm going at it three ways. What can I say? I've missed my atmospheric October reads.

Read two books from the above categories. Two seems like a small number, but I've been reading at a snail's pace for a couple of months now.

Self-explanatory. Novels will scare me but it typically takes a short story to terrify me. There's just so much left to the imagination, and mine is more than willing to fill in the gaps.

I am a wimp when it comes to horror movies! But my husband and I are slowly watching The Walking Dead (NO SPOILERS, PLEASE!), we want to start the shows Penny Dreadful and American Horror Story, and my friend wants to go see that new movie, The Visit (after we send someone else to report back on the scare factor). I'll get this one done in my own way.

If you want to join in, sign up at The Estella Society. I hope to see you there!

Do you have any recommendations for books I should read? I do love me some Joe Hill and Stephen King, but I need to branch out from that family. I also adore Gothic novels.

I have an affiliate relationship with Malaprop's, my local independent bookstore located in beautiful downtown Asheville, NC; and Better World Books. I will receive a small commission at no cost to you if you purchase books through links on my site. My opinions are completely my own.

  1. I'm doing Peril the First but then I'm not doing the other ones this year (short story, etc.). If you are fans of The Walking Dead, there are some really funny Pinterest boards on the show. ;)

  2. If you are looking for short stories, I just finished Vampires in the Lemon Grove and it would have been perfect for RIP!

  3. This sounds like fun, and fall is the perfect time for these types of reads and movies. Penny Dreadful is such a cool show!

Thanks for taking the time to comment! Have a great day!
